Poor air quality could impact your health, doctors warn

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Doctors say poor air quality can pose health risks, even when there are no obvious signs of smoke in the air.Experts say small particles from wildfires smoke and other pollutants can travel through the air and affect how people breathe, especially those with asthma or other underlying health conditions.“Right now, the particles that are in the air that you can smell are extremely small,” said Dr. Jason Henry, a pulmonologist at Piedmont Augusta. “These particles are so small that they get all the way down into the bottoms of your lungs, and they’re even so small that they can get into bloodstream itself.”Henry said those particles, often referred to as PM 2.5, can affect many people because of how easily they enter the lungs.He also said some people are more sensitive than others.“You might expect to see flare-ups of chronic conditions like coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath,” Henry said. “Some people might feel dizzy, headaches.
