North Edwards couple accused of child torture files claim alleging wrongful conduct by county

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A North Edwards couple charged with torture in connection to the alleged abuse of their adopted children filed a claim against Kern County, accusing county officials of wrongful conduct including a “flawed and biased investigation.”

Matthew James, 38, and Brittney James, 35, were arrested Oct. 16 in North Edwards on suspicion of child abuse and torture, according to county officials.

North Edwards is a small desert town, 80 miles east of Bakersfield and 20 miles north of Mojave.

They were each charged with three counts of torture and assault, among other crimes like child cruelty and false imprisonment. Both are being held without bail…
