A quiet Fort Lauderdale block turned violent on Friday morning when a dog fight spiraled into gunfire, leaving two dogs dead and at least two more wounded, police said. The chaos broke out around 9:30 a.m., and a nearby dog owner was bitten while trying to pull animals apart. Officers quickly flooded the area, taping off the scene as investigators tried to sort out how a neighborhood scuffle ended in a shooting.
What police say
Fort Lauderdale Police told reporters that at least five dogs were involved in the melee and that a man who owned at least one of the animals pulled a gun and opened fire, hitting four dogs. Two of those dogs were pronounced dead at the scene, according to NBC6 South Florida. Aerial footage captured officers clustered around the home, with tarps covering the animals. The wounded dogs were rushed to a nearby veterinary hospital for treatment.
