CHP: Armed suspect shoots self following I-80 pursuit, hours-long standoff in Placer County

PLACER COUNTY, Calif. — A police pursuit that began in Elk Grove temporarily shut down eastbound Interstate 80 for several hours early Friday near Gold Run, authorities said.

The Elk Grove Police Department alerted the California Highway Patrol’s Gold Run office around 2 a.m. that a chase involving a suspect believed to be armed was leaving its jurisdiction and entering Placer County.

CHP officers deployed a spike strip, bringing the vehicle to a stop on eastbound Interstate 80, west of Crystal Springs Road. Officers then carried out a high-risk stop, but the suspect refused to get out of the vehicle, leading to a prolonged standoff…
