Heritage Trail Pottery Tour and sale in Edgefield and Johnston to begin with opening of wood-fired Groundhog Kiln Saturday

EDGEFIELD, S.C. (WJBF) – Justin Guy, a Master Potter working in the Edgefield, S.C., tradition, will be opening the Edgefield Groundhog Kiln located across from 4 Crest Road in Edgefield Saturday, April 25th, at 9 a.m. to remove more than 100 original, newly fired pieces of pottery, ranging from face jugs to vases, large and small jugs, pots, and jars, and more.

The Doctor Aruthur and Esther Goldberg Groundhog Kiln in what was once called “Pottersville” just a mile north of the present town center of Edgefield, SC, was built by Guy, Bob Taft (who helps operate the kiln and will be selling his own wood-fired pieces Saturday and Sunday, in addition to Guy), and Gary Clontz in 2011, allowing potters to replicate the labor-intensive process of wood-firing pottery, a technique used in the area going back to the beginning of the 1800s.

A number of these one-of-a-kind wood-fired earthen ware pieces made by participating artisans will be put up for sale after being removed from the kiln Saturday, kicking off a weekend celebrating the craft of ceramics in Edgefield County lasting until Sunday…
