Kern County free expungement clinic helps more than 300 residents get fresh start

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A fresh start is what more than 300 people showed up for at the area’s fourth annual free expungement clinic, organized by California State University Bakersfield and the local legal community.

The clinic is all about second chances. There, community members have the chance to get criminal records expunged and open doors for better employment, housing, and other resources that may not have been available to them.

“Individuals are incarcerated, go through the system, serve their time, but then come home and have all of these barriers in place,” said Jaubrae Dixon, founder of C.H.A.N.G.E.S, a nonprofit organization.

Dixon was released from prison two years ago after being incarcerated for nearly a decade. Since then, he started a nonprofit that works with at-risk youth and adults. He said he’s thankful to get his record expunged and is determined to help others turn their lives around the way he did…
