Bittersweet feeling for attendees at last Gathering of Nations

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It’s the final dance for Gathering of Nations, with many sad to see it go. The event brings thousands of Native Americans to Albuquerque to celebrate their history and culture.

For more than 40 years, this has been the home of the largest powwow in North America. Spectators from all over the country have come to see it for the very last time. “I think it’s good that we’re all together here one last time, especially from all over the country, all here just to celebrate our culture one last time, just to get to enjoy it,” said AJ Hernandez, a spectator.

Gathering of Nations organizers said they are ending the gathering so they can retire. Typically, events range from competitions to parades, and of course, the powwow with traditional drumming, dancing, and singing…
