City pulls $34M for Kamehameha property acquisition in Hawaii Kai

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Honolulu City Council has removed $34 million from its budget that was earmarked to acquire a six-acre property on Hawaii Kai Drive, Hawaii News Now learned Friday morning.

The property, formerly occupied by the Japan-America Institute of Management Science (JAIMS), sits between Pepeekeo and Hahaione streets. The leases for the property, a nearby 7-Eleven complex, and a two-story building in between are set to expire in 2028. The land is owned by Kamehameha Schools.

The budget line item was pulled because it wasn’t financially feasible, according to a city council spokesperson.
