Investigation into Ryerson fire indicates smoldering welding spark ignited blaze

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — Investigators have determined the Saturday morning fire at Ryerson Saturday was accidental and apparently caused by a smoldering welding spark that eventually ignited underneath a machine.

The Cainhoy Fire Department said that crews first arrived around 9:38 a.m. to find heavy smoke showing from the back of the metal distributor’s single-story industrial facility on South Steel Circle in Huger. The Ryerson facility is nearby the large Nucor Steel facility.

A second alarm was requested around 9:50 a.m. after crews surveyed the building’s exterior, and multiple agencies responded to fight the blaze. Due to the large size of the building and poor visibility due to the heavy smoke, crews had difficulty locating the fire, Cainhoy FD said. The fire, which firefighters noted contained flammable liquids, was eventually located and extinguished.
