Akron man pleads guilty to shooting at police during March traffic stop

AKRON, Ohio — Jon Tae Von Angelo Nelson, the man charged with multiple felonies for shooting at two Akron police officers during a March traffic stop, has pleaded guilty to lesser charges in Summit County court.

According to court documents, the 30-year-old Nelson pleaded guilty on April 22 to the following offenses:

  • Discharge of a firearm on or near prohibited premises (first-degree misdemeanor)
  • Failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer (third-degree felony)
  • Improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle (fourth-degree felony)

Nelson is scheduled to be sentenced on May 21.

As part of Nelson’s guilty plea, the court dropped multiple charges, including a count of felonious assault, multiple firearm specifications including a five-year “drive by shooting” specification and a charge of having weapons while under disability. The court also dismissed one additional count each of failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer and improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle.

Authorities say the officers initially pulled Nelson’s Ford F-150 XLT over for an alleged traffic violation at Vernon Odom Boulevard and Tyler Street early on March 18.
