Mark Greer appointed to vacant Akron City Council seat following contentious selection process

AKRON, Ohio — After four rounds of voting and heated debate from the community, Mark Greer has been appointed to fill a vacant seat on Akron City Council, replacing the retired Jeff Fusco. But according to the newly appointed councilmember, he wasn’t even in the building when the voting started.

“I was at home and just working on some emails,” Greer told 3News in an interview. “I turned on the live stream of the council meeting thinking that everything was already set. When I had heard that I was nominated from the floor, which was a surprise, I thought I (had) better head down there.”

Before the fourth and final vote, council called a recess to debate between the two remaining candidates: Greer and George Johnson. The pause drew audible groans from audience members, who had each taken three-minute turns to address legislators before the first round of voting…
