Trailblazing firefighter Capt. John Lyon, who helped integrate Durham Fire Department, dies at 92

Loved ones of Capt. John Lyon are preparing to lay the 92-year-old trailblazer and Korean War veteran to rest.

Family members said Lyon’s legacy was defined by perseverance, turning obstacles into opportunities throughout his life.

Lyon was one of the first African American firefighters hired in Durham in 1958. He was part of a groundbreaking group known as the “Original Ten,” who reported to Fire Station 4 and helped integrate the department.
