Boise Cascade fined $6.38 million for illegal timber trafficking scheme

MIAMI, Florida — Boise Cascade Company has pleaded guilty to a felony violation of the Lacey Act for its involvement in a timber trafficking scheme, resulting in a $6.38 million fine.

The fine represents twice the gross profits Boise Cascade derived from the illegal wood, according to a press release from the Department of Justice. The company must also implement a compliance plan as part of its sentence. This case marks the third federal criminal enforcement action related to a large-scale duty evasion scheme.

Associate Attorney General Stanley E. Woodward Jr. emphasized the importance of thwarting illegal timber mining efforts, stating, “Boise Cascade’s guilty plea is a significant step toward ending illegal timber shipments from entering our country, thereby bolstering American security and safeguarding American citizens from threats of transnational criminal organizations.”…
