TERRE HAUTE — Two Indiana sailors killed during the attack on Pearl Harbor more than 84 years ago have been identified through modern forensic analysis and will be buried with military honors in May.
Seaman 1st Class Paul Newton of Romney and Seaman 1st Class Wayne Newton of Terre Haute, who were second cousins, died during the Japanese attack on Dec. 7, 1941, while serving aboard separate battleships stationed at Pearl Harbor.
Paul Newton served aboard the USS West Virginia and will be buried May 11 at Arlington National Cemetery. Wayne Newton served aboard the USS California and will be buried May 16 at Grandview Cemetery in Terre Haute.
The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency identified the men through a combination of forensic anthropology, dental analysis and DNA testing conducted at agency laboratories in Hawaii and Nebraska.
