Aldi does not have the most grocery stores in Florida, not even close. Publix still holds that title with a commanding lead of more than 900 stores in more than 250 cities, according to data site ScrapeHero. Winn-Dixie is next, with nearly 330 stores in 155 cities.
But the no-frills discount grocery chain is coming up fast with 312 stores in 175 cities in Florida, far more than in any other state, with more opening every month. The next one is in Oviedo, with a grand opening happening April 30. Two more were announced this week for May, in Davie and Venice.
Aldi, famous for its low prices, emphasis on store-brand stock, and lack of amenities such as on-site delis, bakeries, pharmacies, or baggers, has plenty of stores in big metro areas such as Orlando (11), Tampa (11), and Jacksonville (16), but it’s also rapidly spreading into smaller markets where a discount grocery store might be badly needed.
