ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Affordable housing continues to be a growing challenge across western North Carolina, especially for veterans transitioning back into civilian life or facing homelessness.
Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry, also known as ABCCM, is working to address that need through its Veterans Village project on Tunnel Road in Asheville. The nonprofit is transforming a former hotel into 120 permanent supportive housing units for veterans.
Some veterans have already moved in, including Army veteran Joseph Roden. After the Sept. 11 attacks, Roden said he felt called to serve his country. He joined the Army in 2007, serving in Iraq and later attending sniper school, he said…
