The State Ethics Commission has accused former Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria of improperly receiving payments from a program he initiated and concealing those payments from public view, in violation of conflict-of-interest laws.
The commission’s Enforcement Division issued an Order to Show Cause on Wednesday that claims DeMaria collected $220,000 in payments between 2016 and 2021 from controversial “longevity bonuses” — much of which he was not entitled to receive, according to state officials.
The longevity bonuses were paid out as part of a city ordinance, asked for by DeMaria and passed in the fall of 2016, to reward the mayor with a $10,000 bonus for each completed term and a one-time $10,000 bonus for each previously completed term…
