Hours after District Attorney Tanner Rouse announced that Chester had no recorded incidents of gun violence in March, a first since records have been kept, later that night on April 22 a man shot his girlfriend, shot at police who responded, and was wounded when police shot back.
According to police, Jose Ortiz,42, shot his girlfriend near 9th and Chestnut sts. in Chester, then began shooting at bystanders and police who responded to the incident. Police returned fire and Ortiz was shot and tazed before being apprehended. There were no fatalities.
Rouse announced Chester’s non-violent milestone during comments at the April 22 County Council meeting in Media. He was there to highlight National Crime Victims’ Rights Week and was happy to relay that the county has fewer victims of crime than at any time in recent memory…
