Craig Melvin Missing from Today Show During Special Route 66 Broadcast

Additional Coverage:

Craig Melvin was notably absent from the Today show this past week as the program aired a special remote broadcast. On April 30, viewers saw Dylan Dreyer and Al Roker anchoring the show instead of Melvin, as the team broadcast from Park Central Square in downtown Springfield, Missouri, rather than their usual Studio 1A.

This special edition commemorated the 100th anniversary of Route 66, which originated in Springfield. The hosts were joined outdoors by a lively crowd and special guests, including Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe, who presented Today with the official key to Route 66. Dylan Dreyer remarked on the enthusiastic audience, while Laura later shared that many fans had been waiting since 4 a.m. to attend.

The Springfield broadcast is part of Today’s ongoing tradition of producing special episodes from various locations around the country. Notably, Craig Melvin’s absence was not addressed during the show.

Just a day prior, Melvin had appeared alongside Savannah Guthrie to interview the Artemis II astronauts, an event he shared on Instagram with a photo of the group smiling together. Guthrie recently returned to the show after a brief absence related to her 83-year-old mother’s disappearance.

In other Today news, Jenna Bush Hager responded to questions about former President Donald Trump’s absence from a recent segment featuring interviews with several living presidents. The interviews, recorded in Philadelphia during The History Channel’s History Talks event, included conversations with George W. Bush, Joe Biden, Barack Obama, and Bill Clinton in honor of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary.

Jenna clarified that the History Talks event traditionally features former presidents discussing their legacies and noted that President Trump is collaborating with The History Channel on a separate America 250 project, with further details to be announced later this spring.
