GHENT, WV (WVNS) — While many horse racing fans prepare to watch the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May, there is another big race that takes place the day before the Run for the Roses:
The Kentucky Oaks.
According to the Kentucky Derby website, the Kentucky Oaks, also known as the Longines Kentucky Oaks, is “America’s premier race for 3-year-old fillies” and “offers a $1.5 million purse and awards the winner the iconic ‘Lilies for the Fillies’ garland.” The 1 1/8 mile race will be held at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.
