Memphis surgeon credits teamwork in saving officer’s leg

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A plastic and reconstructive surgeon at the Regional One Medical Center says they were determined to save the leg of a Marion Police Officer seriously injured when he was hit by another officer’s vehicle during a chase.

Dr. Thao Wolbert was part of a team that treated Sgt. Darrell Prewitt when he was rushed from West Memphis to Memphis on April 6.

Doctor Wolbert said Prewitt’s foot was literally hanging by his calf muscle. She said Prewitt had a bone fracture, his blood vessels were severed, and he had no blood flow to his foot.

“Once he hits the door, vascular surgeons who are very experienced, who already have limb salvage programs here. They perform about 100 vascular bypasses a year for trauma. Probably the most number in the world,” said Wolbert. “They brought him to the OR right away to do a bypass.”
