Much-needed rain and mountain snow moving into New Mexico tonight

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – New Mexico will finally get some much-needed rain and mountain snow as a storm system moves into the state. The heaviest rain will fall across eastern New Mexico, with lighter amounts farther west.

Rain is developing around the Sangre de Cristo Mountains on Thursday, with snow falling above 8,000 feet. Snow has already been accumulating in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains tonight. A few spotty showers and thunderstorms are also moving through far southern New Mexico. Strong east winds have developed in the Albuquerque Metro as higher humidity surges westward. A Wind Advisory in in effect for the Metro until 6 am. Wind gusts up to 50 mph are possible.

Rain and mountain snow will continue to expand across northern, eastern, and southern New Mexico as the storm system moves in. By early Friday morning, widespread moderate rain will cover much of eastern New Mexico. Snow will increase tonight in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, where Winter Storm Warnings are in effect. Snowfall totals of 2″ to 8″ are expected between 7,500′ and 9,500′, with 8″ to 12″ possible above 9,500′. A Winter Weather Advisory is also in effect for Raton Pass and surrounding areas. A rain and snow mix could reach as far south as Las Vegas and Clines Corners…
