A parent’s perspective: Why I secured Canadian citizenship for my kids to expand their future opportunities
My family loves to travel-our children have been to 28 countries across six continents. Yet, despite our globe-trotting adventures, crossing borders often remains a complicated process, involving visa applications and careful attention to travel restrictions. Always seeking ways to give my children greater freedom and advantages I didn’t have, I recently pursued Canadian citizenship for them, unlocking new possibilities for education, work, healthcare, and global mobility.
Discovering eligibility through a new law
One evening while browsing social media, I came across a neighbor’s post about her family’s recent Canadian citizenship, made possible by a new law allowing descendants of Canadians to claim citizenship. Since my husband’s family traces back to Canada-his grandfather was born in Ontario-I promptly applied for our children’s citizenship.
A dream revisited: Canada as a home and opportunity
Nearly two decades ago, my husband and I visited British Columbia and were captivated by its natural beauty and relaxed lifestyle. Back then, we explored immigration options but found none that fit our situation. Without eligibility for citizenship, we reluctantly accepted that living in Canada was out of reach.
Now, with Canadian citizenship secured for our children, that dream feels more achievable-not only as a place to live but also as a practical option for college. Canadian universities offer excellent education at a fraction of U.S. tuition costs, with familiar language and culture easing the transition. This shift in possibilities has changed our family conversations about higher education and finances entirely.
Opening doors to global work and healthcare security
Canadian citizenship extends beyond education. Programs like International Experience Canada provide young adults the chance to work in more than 35 countries, from Costa Rica to South Korea-a freedom I lacked when starting my career. My children will have these opportunities to explore international work experiences as they grow.
Healthcare is another critical consideration. While we currently have good insurance in the U.S., I worry about future access-especially for my medically complex eldest daughter. Knowing they can rely on Canada’s national healthcare system brings peace of mind.
A stronger passport for easier travel
Finally, Canadian passports offer greater travel flexibility. According to the Passport Index, Canada ranks seventh globally for passport strength, ahead of the U.S. at tenth. This means visa-free or simplified travel to more countries, making it easier for my children to explore the world without barriers.
In securing Canadian citizenship for my kids, I’ve opened doors to education, career options, healthcare, and global mobility that I hope will help them pursue their dreams with fewer limits. It’s a gift of choice and security that I believe will serve them well throughout their lives.
