Amarillo Police Department warns of ‘sophisticated’ financial scam, possible kidnapping attempt

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – The Amarillo Police Department released a warning about a “sophisticated scam” that led to a woman’s “substantial financial loss” and possible attempted kidnapping on Wednesday.

According to the police department, officers responded Wednesday to a reported fraud in which a woman was initially contacted by someone posing as a bank fraud department representative. After that contact, a second suspect allegedly contacted the woman and claimed the first caller was part of a larger criminal operation within the bank.

Police said the two suspects allegedly “used fear, urgency, and deception” to manipulate the woman into withdrawing cash from her personal account. She was then instructed to handle the cash in a specific way, package it, and send it elsewhere through delivery services.

The suspects allegedly also arranged rideshare vehicles to go to the woman’s home. Police said the woman refused to enter any vehicle, turned off her phone, contacted family members, and reported the incident to law enforcement…
