Mike Smith, at 60 years old, is gearing up for his 29th Kentucky Derby appearance in 2026 at Churchill Downs, setting a record for the most Derby rides by any jockey. Riding the horse So Happy, Smith enters the race as a 15-1 contender, aiming to become the oldest jockey to win the Derby-a title currently held by Bill Shoemaker, who won aboard Ferdinand at age 54 in 1986.
Smith’s distinguished career includes two previous Derby wins: with Giacomo in 2005 and Justify in 2018. Speaking with The Courier Journal ahead of this year’s race, Smith reflected on his longevity in the sport. While he doesn’t plan to retire immediately, he acknowledged that the 2026 Derby might be his last at Churchill Downs.
“How much longer can I go? The way I feel right now, I’d say another 10 years.
I feel great,” Smith shared. “But realistically, as you get into your 60s, you understand there comes a time.
I’m not saying I’m retiring, but this could be my last Derby.” He added, “I might ride next year, but that doesn’t guarantee I’ll make it back-it’s tough to get back.”
Smith’s first Derby ride was in 1984, a time when he was new to the racing world and had never even taken a cab. Today, he is celebrated as one of American horse racing’s most accomplished jockeys. Reflecting on that early experience, Smith recalled overhearing others discussing the Derby and asking for a ride, which he ultimately got from a group of strangers.
Beyond the Derby, Smith holds the distinction of being the oldest jockey to complete the personal Triple Crown, with two Preakness wins and three victories at Belmont Stakes under his belt. His second Derby win came in 2018 aboard Justify, trained by Bob Baffert. At the time, Smith praised the horse’s extraordinary talent and the team’s efforts.
“This horse ran a tremendous race,” Smith said then. “He’s so gifted, it’s like he was sent from heaven.
To win six races in such a short time is an incredible achievement. Bob has done a tremendous job preparing him.”
Looking ahead to the 2026 Derby, Smith faces strong competition. The current favorite is Renegarde, ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., at 4-1 odds. Commandment and Further Ado also pose serious challenges, both holding 6-1 odds.
As Smith chases his potential third Derby victory, the racing world watches closely-not only to see if he can add to his legacy but also to witness a remarkable career that continues to defy age and expectations.
