BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services Program is taking steps this month to try and prevent the spread of rabies in raccoons here in Western New York.
Starting Monday, helicopters will be distributing the oral rabies vaccine in select areas of Erie and Niagara counties. The baits are a little larger than a quarter and are covered with a plastic packet. If you come into contact with the baits, you are asked to wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and water and contact your local health department.
“During the baiting period, residents may see and hear low-flying aircraft,” Scott Ecker, environmental health director, said.
