Every evening, Dianne Rogers’ neighborhood in north Reno wakes up—not to traffic, not to neighbors—but to birds.

Blue jays. Wrens. Woodpeckers. Hummingbirds, fearless enough to hover inches from her face and stare her down. A lot has changed for Rogers in the 40 years she has lived here, but the one thing that has stayed constant is the evening chorus outside her kitchen window.

“All the birds start talking at once,” she said. “It gets loud. And that is the joy of it.”

Rogers installed motion-sensor solar lights in her backyard years ago, after a stalker made her afraid of the dark. It was a practical decision with no deeper meaning; she was just a woman trying to make her home feel safer…
