Monday marks first day on the job for new Buffalo police commissioner

Monday is the first day on the job for the Buffalo Police Department’s new commissioner.

The appointment of Erika Shields was confirmed by Buffalo Common Council by a 5-4 vote last week. The vote came after she was questioned about her tenure as commissioner for the Atlanta Police Department. That ended in her June 2020 resignation hours after an Atlanta officer shot and killed a Black man.
