Detroit Shelter Offers Free Pet Adoptions as National Adoption Numbers Drop

Detroit Animal Care and Control kicked off a free adoption event Saturday. It’s part of the 10th annual “Empty the Shelters” push. This initiative runs through May 17. The Bissell Pet Foundation picks up all fees.

Over 100 dogs wait for homes at the site, with names like Zuzu, Styletta, and Blazing Star. Adoptions have plummeted across the nation. Shelters buckle under strain when the economy tanks.

“Adoptions have been down nationwide for all dogs, so we are really hopeful this event is going to get the word back out and show that shelter dogs make great pets,” said Dana Eldred to FOX 2 Detroit…
