Myrtle Beach airport braces for disruptions after Spirit shutdown

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WPDE) — Spirit Airlines’ nationwide shutdown is expected to hit Myrtle Beach International Airport in the short term, after a three-decade partnership that accounted for nearly a quarter of the airport’s traffic.

U.S. Rep. Russell Fry, who represents the area, said the closure will affect both tourists who relied on Spirit to reach the Grand Strand and the airline’s employees.

“Myrtle Beach International has seen record growth year after year. In fact, it’s the fastest growing airport in South Carolina and there’s a reason for that. People want to come here for our weather or for a great vacation with their family,” Fry said in a statement. “This is a big hit to the area, but really to the employees of Spirit.”…
