What Makes A Great Monte Cristo?

A Monte Cristo is a study in opposites that join together to form a rich, luxurious taste. Savory ham, sweet jam, a sharp cheese like Swiss or Gruyere, and a soft, eggy batter. A humble ham sandwich, but make it bad and boujie and throw that bad boy in the deep fryer.

First, An Ode To The O.G.

For possibly decades, the only place in Lubbock to get a Monte Cristo was Gardski’s (r.i.p.). A Gardski Monte Cristo was legendary, and as a kid, it felt beyond fancy. As a young adult, I was hyper-focused on the Bloody Marys, and I’m afraid I took that sandwich for granted.

My Dad says the best Monte Cristo in Lubbock history was at The Depot restaurant. I also regret never getting to try it.
