HOUSTON (CW39) — Two Katy ISD students received a big surprise before their graduation, as they got a pair of scholarships totaling more than $225,000.
Marlee Day and Emily Melhem, both seniors at Taylor High School, got their scholarships at an awards ceremony at the Merrill Center this weekend.

What’s the details of the first scholarship?
Day received a $100,000 C. Jackson Grayson Scholarship from APQC, becoming one of a select group of Houston-area students recognized for financial need, academic promise and a strong commitment to service. She spent years working as a volunteer with children in therapeutic and enrichment settings while working as a lifeguard and swim instructor.
Day will attend Texas State University to pursue a nursing degree. She plans to be an oncology nurse, a goal inspired by her late grandmother.
How much is the second scholarship?
Melhem earned a Top Scholar award from the University of Texas at San Antonio, a scholarship worth around $125,000 for four years. The scholarship covers tuition, fees, room, board and a study abroad experience.
