TORNILLO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — El Paso County Animal Welfare has confirmed a rabies-positive bat in Tornillo over the weekend, but officials say there is no sign of widespread risk to the public.
The agency is urging residents to stay cautious, noting that rabies exists in local wildlife and that awareness can help protect people, families and pets.
El Paso County Animal Welfare recommended several steps to reduce risk:
- Keep pets’ rabies vaccinations up to date (every year).
- Avoid contact with wildlife, especially bats.
- Report animals acting unusually or aggressively.
- Never handle dead animals; report them instead.
Anyone who sees a dead or injured animal, or notices concerning behavior, is asked to call El Paso County Animal Welfare at 915-546-2280 or the Socorro Animal Control Department at 915-858-9237…
