Karoline Leavitt Names Baby Viviana, a Rare Choice Gaining Popularity

Additional Coverage:

Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, has welcomed her baby girl, announcing the joyful news on Thursday. The 28-year-old shared photos of her newborn daughter on Instagram after recently taking maternity leave from her White House duties. Supporters and friends quickly offered their congratulations as Leavitt posed with the new addition to her family.

Leavitt, already a mother to a two-year-old son named Niko, has now introduced a baby sister for him. She chose the name Viviana for her daughter, affectionately calling her Vivi-a distinctive variation of a more common name in the United States.

In her Instagram post, Leavitt wrote, “On May 1st, Viviana aka ‘Vivi’ joined our family, and our hearts instantly exploded with love. She is perfect and healthy, and her big brother is joyfully adjusting to life with his new baby sister.

We are enjoying every moment in our blissful newborn bubble. Thank you to everyone who reached out with prayers during my pregnancy-I truly felt them throughout the entire experience.

God is Good.”

According to the most recent data from the Social Security Administration, Viviana ranked 368th among U.S. baby girl names in 2024, showing a rise in popularity from 409th in 2020. That year, 846 babies were named Viviana, accounting for just under 0.05% of all girl births. While the name’s popularity peaked slightly in 2023, with 850 newborns receiving it, it remains relatively uncommon compared to the more popular Vivian, which ranked 77th with 3,088 births.

The name Viviana has Italian roots and means “alive” or “lively.” It has seen a resurgence in use over the past century. After gaining some popularity in the early 1900s, the name experienced a decline mid-century before steadily climbing in recent decades, reaching its highest use in the last five years.

Leavitt’s choice of Viviana reflects a preference for a unique yet meaningful name, adding a new chapter to her family’s story.
