Tornado watch through 6:00 a.m. Thursday morning

WEAR — There is a tornado watch in effect for Southwest Alabama as well as Escambia County, Florida through 6:00 a.m. Thursday morning.

A batch of thunderstorms was moving East late Thursday night over areas of Mississippi and Alabama. The storms prompted storm warnings for damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes. Several tornadoes were reported in Mississippi. While the thunderstorms may impact areas around the Florida/Alabama line well away from the coast, any rain is not expected to hit the coastal areas until at least after sunrise Thursday morning.

Late Wednesday night, the Storm Prediction Center said regarding the tornado watch, “Primary threats include… A couple intense tornadoes possible. Scattered damaging wind gusts to 70 mph possible. Isolated large hail events to 1.5 inches in diameter possible.
