LAFAYETTE, La. (NEWS 15) — Medical professionals in Acadiana are utilizing low-dose radiation therapy as an innovative treatment for osteoarthritis, offering a non-surgical alternative for patients struggling with chronic joint pain.
Radiation oncologist Dr. Kyle Russo explained that while radiation is typically associated with high-dose cancer treatments, low doses possess significant anti-inflammatory properties. This specialized approach targets the “wear and tear” of joint cartilage, a condition that affects around 40% of adults during their lifetime.
The treatment primarily focuses on larger joints, including knees, hips, shoulders, and wrists. Russo noted that the procedure serves as a “bridge” for patients who have not found relief through traditional medications or steroid injections but may not yet be ready for surgery.
