Spokane Transit Authority will ask voters to continue funding public transit with sales tax in August

Two weeks ago, the Spokane Transit Authority Board of Directors was about to decide whether to put a ballot measure before voters this August in an effort to keep sales tax money flowing to the public transit system.

But during public comment at the April 16 meeting, Lance Beck, chief strategy officer for Greater Spokane Incorporated, asked the board to delay the vote so the regional chamber of commerce could meet with some STA board members in private on April 28 to discuss concerns about the ballot measure.

As drafted, the measure would have asked voters to renew a 0.2% sales tax for transit that was first approved in 2016 and is set to expire at the end of 2028, this time without a sunset clause dictating an end date for the funding…
