EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – El Paso County Commissioners will decide whether to open bids for management of the Coliseum, days after the current operator said officials had promised the role to the University of Texas at El Paso.
Sports Commission wants answers on rumored UTEP takeover of Coliseum
The El Paso Sports Commission has managed the property for nearly 23 years and has advocated for a long-term contract to help secure sponsorships. While the commission’s contract has gone through various renewals, a vote to open bids would be the first time in at least two decades.
Representatives from the sports commission and El Paso Hockey Association made a pitch to keep their management to the commissioners court on Monday, May 4, promising a second hockey rink, field house, and $12 million investment in the property
“We are getting events,” Tony Rodriguez, director of communications and events for the El Paso Sports Commission told KTSM. “We are doing so much. And, as you saw in the presentation, we are doing improvements inside the Coliseum too.”…
