SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — After the parent company of Canvas Education technology experienced a data breach, local schools are discussing the impact and what data may have been released.
On Tuesday, a hacking group known as ShinyHunters sent messages to Canvas users, stating that they breached Instructure, which is the parent company for Canvas and is based in Salt Lake City. Hackers threatened to release personal data unless they received a settlement.

ShinyHunters: rooting your systems since ’19 😉 ShinyHunters have breach Instructure (again). Instead of contacting us to resolve it they ignored us and did some “security patches.” WARNING: If any of the schools affected in the list are interested in preventing the release of their data, please consult with a cyber advisory firm and contact us privately at TOX to negotiate a settlement.

The Utah State Board of Education released a statement about the data breach, stating that they are aware of the national cybersecurity incident. USBE stated that potentially impacted data may include, “usernames, email addresses, student identification numbers, and messages exchanged within the Canvas platform.”…
