Man tied to deadly Brooks Sandwich House shooting convicted in 3 more murders

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man who killed five people over the course of six weeks has been convicted in three of those murders.

Steven Staples, 37, pleaded guilty to three counts of second-degree murder in Mecklenburg County Court on Friday. Staples was sentenced to 264-329 months, or 22-27 years, in prison for the murders. This will run concurrently with the life sentence he received for a previous murder conviction.

The three murders Staples was convicted of on Friday happened in December 2019 and January 2020. Staples shot and killed Anthony Leakes, 40, on Dec. 23, 2019, at a home on Elliott Drive. He then shot and killed Siojvon Joseph, 35, and Asa Shannon, 35, on Jan. 11 in their car on Atando Avenue…
