Speed cameras to be installed on Interstate 81 in Roanoke & Botetourt counties, VSP says

ROANOKE & BOTETOURT COUNTIES, Va. (WDBJ) – Speed safety cameras will be erected on Interstate 81 in Roanoke County and Botetourt County; they’ll be activated Monday, May 11, 2026 for enforcement, Virginia State Police announced Friday.

The cameras will be built along the northbound and southbound sides of the highway in the work zone between the 143 and 150 mile markers; use of the cameras is authorized under Virginia law (Code § 46.2-882.1), VSP said.

A 30-day “warning” period will begin Monday; violators will receive a warning to educate them about the program and enlist their support with improving work zone safety instead of a citation. Each offense is validated by VSP before a citation or warning is issued, State Police said…
