Safety of St. Louis students’ data unclear after Canva is restored to region’s schools

ST. LOUIS — Schools across the St. Louis region and nationwide were able to access grades and educational resources on Friday after a massive ransomware attack forced the service to shut down on Thursday.

Instructure, the parent company of Canvas, announced the software was back online for most users late Thursday night after the developers put it in maintenance mode at 5 p.m. The company did not confirm whether data of educators and students who use the platform was compromised in the attack.

A hacker group known as “ShinyHunters” took credit for the ransomware attack. Students at the University of Missouri who attempted to log on to Canvas on Thursday afternoon were instead greeted with a message from the group, which threatened to release school data unless officials negotiated a settlement with the hackers…
