LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The man accused of shooting and killing a Las Vegas police officer in 2022 pleaded guilty but mentally ill to over 20 charges, including murder, according to documents obtained by 8 News Now.
Officer Truong Thai, a 23-year Metro police veteran, was responding to a domestic disturbance involving Tyson Hampton, 27, on Oct. 13, 2022, when Hampton allegedly shot him near Flamingo Road and University Center Drive, police said.

On Tuesday, Hampton entered a guilty but mentally ill plea to one count of murder with the use of a deadly weapon, four counts of attempted murder with the use of a deadly weapon, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of battery with the use of a deadly weapon resulting in substantial bodily harm, 19 counts of discharging of a firearm from or within a structure or vehicle and one count of battery constituting domestic violence, court document showed.
As part of the plea agreement, if the court finds Hampton not to be mentally ill at the time of his sentencing, the court will sentence him the same as a defendant who pleads or is found guilty.
If he is found to be mentally ill at the time of his sentencing, the court will include an order in his sentence that during his confinement and/or probation, he will be given treatment as is medically indicated for his mental illness.

If his sentence includes prison time, Hampton will be separated from the general population and will not return to that population until a licensed psychiatrist or psychologist finds that he no longer requires “acute mental health care.” If returned to the general population, he will be given treatment for his mental illness, according to the plea agreement…
