Blakeview: This ‘different’ New Orleans restaurant served tiger, hippo and other exotic animal meat

This week we remember one of New Orleans’ lost restaurants, T. Pittari’s, best known for its unusual wild game and lobster dishes.

Anthony Pittari opened the restaurant in 1895 at the corner of Washington Avenue and Magazine Street. It moved to 4200 S. Claiborne Ave. in 1948, taking up nearly the whole block and illuminated by a giant neon sign.

Pittari’s nephew, Thomas Pittari Sr., eventually took over the restaurant, running it with his wife and son, Tom Jr…
