Vineyard Haven man arrested by ICE for homicide in Brazil

Federal immigration officers arrested a Vineyard Haven man facing homicide charges last month as part of a regional operation that targeted five foreign nationals wanted for murder charges in their home countries. The detained individual is now held in Plymouth.

Altieris Chaves Paiva, 38, a Brazilian national, was detained by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Boston on April 5 for an alleged murder in Brazil. A Brazilian arrest warrant was issued for Paiva in April of 2024, and he was subject to an Interpol Red Notice, which Interpol states is sent to law enforcement agencies globally to arrest an individual “pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action.”

According to Edgartown District Court records, Paiva lived at 21 Cromwell St. in Vineyard Haven in 2024, but it is uncertain how long he lived at the property. Oak Bluffs police previously arrested Paiva in 2024 on charges of operating under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and a marked lanes violation.
