50,000 Alabamians dropped from food assistance program

New federal SNAP requirements have cut thousands of Alabamians off food assistance, with food bank leaders saying the changes are impacting more families, children and seniors across the state.

Food bank leaders say they’re concerned this is only the beginning, with nearly 50,000 Alabamians no longer enrolled in SNAP compared to last year.

New federal SNAP requirements have expanded work rules for people receiving benefits. Adults between 18 and 64 without young dependents must now work, train or volunteer at least 80 hours a month in order to keep their assistance…
