After decline in enrollment, Providence Public Schools could cut 100+ positions

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — More than 100 staff positions in the Providence Public School District — a majority of which are teachers — are on the chopping block in the upcoming fiscal year, new budget planning documents reveal.

The district’s proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year is nearly $471 million, according to a presentation prepared for Wednesday’s upcoming meeting of the Providence School Board’s Finance Committee.

Last Wednesday, the school board voted 5-1 in favor of cutting nine administrator positions based on a recommendation from Superintendent Dr. Javier Montañez to do so for budgetary reasons…
