FWCS board postpones vote to renew 3DE, additional time needed

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)— After planning to vote on the renewal of the Junior Achievement 3DE project-based learning program on Monday, Fort Wayne Community Schools (FWCS) has postponed the vote.

3DE is a program where Junior Achievement of Northern Indiana brings various local companies into the classroom to present the students with different case challenges the company is facing. From there, the students work in groups to find real-world solutions to the real-world problems they’re presented with. FWCS began the program in 2022. The district recently rolled out new required seminar courses focused on Junior Achievement’s 3DE curriculum.

At an April school board meeting, parents expressed concern about the program continuing. The pushback from parents and students stems from the idea that electives, such as the performing arts like band, choir, or theatre, are being replaced by the seminar courses.

Parents at that meeting also said they were frustrated by the lack of transparency from district leaders and claimed the district does not make opting out of these courses easy…
