COLUMBIA CITY – Three local students have been selected as recipients of Northeastern REMC’s Powering the Future Scholarship, each receiving a $2,000 award to support their education.
Emma Flanagan, of Columbia City, Logan Francis, of Columbia City, and Julianne Ounsombath, of Fort Wayne, were chosen based on academic achievement, community involvement and future goals.
Emma Flanagan, daughter of Anthony and Jennifer Flanagan, will graduate from Columbia City High School and attend Indiana University Bloomington to study fashion design. A member of National Honor Society, FCCLA, marching band, and track and field, Flanagan has earned multiple state and national recognitions in fashion construction. She also works at Wagon Wheel Center for the Arts and her family’s bakery. Teachers describe her as a dedicated leader who consistently goes above and beyond, using her talents to support and mentor others.
Logan Francis, son of Kyle and Abbey Francis, will graduate from Columbia City High School and attend Redlands Community College to study agricultural science. A 10-year 4-H member and active participant in FFA, Francis has demonstrated strong leadership through livestock judging, mentoring younger 4-H members and extensive volunteer service at the Whitley County 4-H Fair. He also balances multiple jobs and is in the process of starting his own goat breeding business. Mentors describe him as dependable, hardworking and deeply committed to serving others.
Julianne Ounsombath, daughter of Michael Ounsombath and Viengvanh Chanthavangso, will graduate from Carroll High School and attend Purdue University to study pharmaceutical sciences. Ounsombath is an accomplished student with honors in academics, photography and athletics. She is a varsity tennis player, National Honor Society member and award-winning photographer at both the regional and national levels. She is also actively involved in volunteer work and cultural exchange programs. Employers and mentors describe her as reliable, driven and consistently exceeding expectations.
