Teacher, staff layoffs hit multiple RI school districts

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — School districts across Rhode Island are approving layoffs for teachers and staff as officials grapple with budget pressures and shifting student enrollment ahead of the next school year.

Several communities landed on staffing changes during school committee meetings Tuesday night.

In Johnston, Superintendent Scott Sutherland described the decisions as difficult, but necessary to meet current needs. According to officials, 89 layoff notices were initially issued.
